WASHINGTON DC — Ionic columns of white Imperial Danby marble are a prominent feature of the Jefferson Memorial. These columns, measuring 43 feet (13 meters) tall and 5 feet 3 inches (1.6 meters) in diameter, support the memorial's Neoclassical dome. Designed by John Russell Pope and dedicated in 1943, the monument honors Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. President. Its circular colonnade and domed rotunda evoke the Roman Pantheon. The memorial is situated on the Tidal Basin in Washington DC.
