Korea: Portrait of Park Yeon (20 August 1378 - 23 March 1485), musician and Confucian philosopher at the Joseon court, with his wife. Hanging scroll painting, early Joseon Period. Park Yeon (Nangye) was born in 1378 into a family of Yeongdong officials. As a talented classical musician, he was responsible for the education of the crown prince Sejong the Great, subsequently reviving and renewing Joseon court music between 1424-1433. He also served as a government official, a scholar, an astronomer and a writer.
