Philip Henry Gosse (1810–1888) was an English naturalist and marine biologist who described numerous invertebrate species. Pachygnathus notops is an aquatic mite first described by Gosse in 1855. The 1855 drawing bears ink inscriptions including the species name and the signature “”P H Gosse del ad viv.”” This archival image documents his scientific illustration produced the same year as the species description.
