Samuel P. Langley’s 1903 Quarter-scale Aerodrome, an unpiloted tandem-wing experimental aircraft, was powered by a five-cylinder radial internal combustion engine generating about 3.2 horsepower. The engine drove two pusher propellers through a geared transmission system. The aircraft featured a silk covering with no sealant or paint. It made two successful test flights: one of 46 meters and another of 108 meters.
