William J. Powell (1897–1942) was an American aviation advocate who founded the Bessie Coleman Flying Club in Los Angeles in 1929 and organized an all-Black air show in 1931 to promote aviation among African Americans. Trained as an engineer and a World War I veteran, he taught aeronautics courses using technical instruments such as this slide rule.
