William J. Powell (1897–1942) was an American aviator and aviation advocate who founded the Bessie Coleman Flying Club in Los Angeles in 1929 and organized the first all-Black air show in 1931. He earned an engineering degree from the University of Illinois and served in a segregated U.S. Army unit during World War I. The archival image documents a slide rule he used while teaching aeronautics classes.
