London, UK, 13 April: A great tit and other small birds visit a bird feeder in a garden in Clapham, south London. The RSPB has issued advice that bird feeders with seeds should be taken down between 1 May and 31 October to prevent the deaths of birds due to trichomonosis. This parasitic disease is easily transmitted where birds cluster around feeders in warmer months. To support bird populations garden owners are advise to put out small quantities of mealworms, or fat balls, or suet which can also be fed directly to chicks whereas seeds are only suitable for adult birds.
