A Bernese pavise, Switzerland, circa 1400 Oval, one-piece wooden standing shield with a massive arch. Both sides fully covered with fine pigskin affixed with bone glue. The obverse with faded colour coating consisting of a yellow bend on a red field with the Bernese bear in black showing his red tongue and white teeth. The reverse with five iron strap loops and an iron bar, two loops with remnants of a leather carrying strap. Dimensions 150 x 58 cm. Well-preserved shield in untouched condition.
