WASHINGTON DC — A watercolor painting by Thomas Chesterfield created for the 1990 Cherry Blossom Festival decorates a restored historic police and fire call box. Police and fire call boxes were installed throughout the capital starting in the 1860s and began to become obsolete with the introduction of the 911 emergency call system in the 1970s, with working electronic components removed by 1995. The call boxes remained due to their size and weight, becoming subject to deterioration from weather and vandalism. This public arts project is a city-wide effort led by Cultural Tourism DC in partners-stock-foto
