Folio from a Qur'an Manuscript late 9th–early 10th century Like many early Qur'an folios, this one is written on parchment in dark brown ink with a broad-nibbed reed pen. The horizontally stretched ligatures are characteristic of Qur'ans of the late 9th, early 10th century, and are thought to be a response to the rectangular page format. The angular script is moderated by the roundness of several letters that look like large black dots, their inner black spaces reduced almost to a needlepoint. Vocalization is indicated by red dots and the triangular pause marks are made up of gold dots. View m-stock-foto

Stone Seals, 18th-19th century, 2 1/4 x 1 3/4 x 1 3/4 in. In the Ming dynasty, soapstone became the preferred material of the literati.-stock-foto
