Schwerin, Germany. 28th Nov, 2023. The fully functional 'Rossini' tube radio from the 1950s is located in a small workshop for old radios, record players and hi-fi systems. Small electrical appliances from East and West have been restored to working order here for around 34 years. Regular customers with a soft spot for GDR radio technology in particular return their equipment to the trained radio and television technician. A lack of spare parts and declining interest among younger customers mean that the days of this unique workshop are probably numbered. P/dpa/Alamy Live News-stock-foto

Much like a car engine, generators require regular maintenance in order to function at optimal levels. The USACE temporary emergency power mission ensures federal generators in Puerto Rico are fully mission capable before they are installed at facilities across the island. If they fail any checks before installation, or require maintenance that cannot be completed on site once installed, the generators are sent to a pier in San Juan for repairs. Here, a contractor makes sure the fuel filter is working properly on a generator Jan. 14.-stock-foto

St Mary's Abbey, Melrose is a partly ruined monastery of the Cistercian order in Melrose, Roxburghshire, in the Scottish Borders. It was founded in 1136 by Cistercian monks at the request of King David I of Scotland and was the chief house of that order in the country until the Reformation. In 1544, as English armies raged across Scotland, the abbey was again badly damaged and was never fully repaired leading to its decline as a working monastery. In 1590, Melrose's last monk died. The abbey was later bombarded by Oliver Cromwell's troops during the English Civil War.-stock-foto
