Sheerness, Kent, UK. 20th Aug, 2025. Notorious shipwreck SS Richard Montgomery at the mouth of the Thames, grounded and sank 81 years ago today back in 1944. The WW2 American liberty ship lies just 1.5 miles offshore of Sheerness and went down with 1400 tonnes of explosives onboard. Monitored 24/7 this shipwreck has generally been left to fate and has proven to be a difficult problem for successive governments to resolve due to the costs and risks involved in removing it.
