Rathmannsdorf, Germany. 21st Apr, 2026. Employees of the Saxon State Office for Environment, Agriculture and Geology bring juvenile salmon caught with a so-called rotary trap in the salmon stream in Rathmannsdorf, Saxony, to the shore for examination. Around two years after being released, the fish migrate downstream and embark on the long journey to the North Sea and the North Atlantic. The fish caught allow conclusions to be drawn about habitat quality and potential numbers of returnees. Credit: Jürgen Lösel/dpa/Alamy Live News-stock-foto

21 April 2026, Saxony, Rathmannsdorf: A juvenile salmon floats in a container on a measuring plate; the fish was caught with a so-called rotary trap in the salmon stream in Rathmannsdorf, Saxony. Around two years after being released, the fish migrate downstream and make the long journey to the North Sea and the North Atlantic. The fish caught allow conclusions to be drawn about habitat quality and potential return numbers. The state salmon program began in the Free State of Saxony in 1995, and since then well over a thousand spawning fish have returned to Saxony. Photo: Jürgen Lösel/dpa-stock-foto
