Limoges was the leading centre for pit-fired enamel in the Middle Ages from the 12th to 14th centuries. The famous works were mostly produced for sacred purposes - crosses, reliquaries and liturgical book covers made of copper, which were filled with enamel powder and fired.  To this day, ‘Limoges enamel’ stands for particularly high-quality, artistically painted art objects made of copper or metal, which are coated with coloured enamel and fired several times.
