November 25, 2025, Morro Bay, California, USA: An endangered southern sea otter basks in the protected, calm waters of Morro Bay. There are around 3,000 southern sea otters from Half Moon Bay to Santa Barbara. The species used to cover a wider range along the entire California coast up to Oregon where the southern otters merged with the northern otters, however, fur hunting during the 19th century drove the animals to near extinction. Monterey, California, USA. 28th Oct, 2025. Sea Otter (Enhydra lutris nereis) spend five hours per day grooming and playing. Unlike seals, sea otters don't have blubber to keep them warm in frigid 35- to 60-degree (F) )1.7 to 16 (C) ) ocean waters. They have air-bubble-trapping fur, the densest fur on Earth. Each square inch of their bodies is covered with 600,000 to one million hairs. An entire human head has only about 100,000 hairs. Sea otters spend more than a quarter of their day cleaning and rubbing air bubbles and their own body oils into the long, coarse guard hairs and short, fine und-stock-foto

File photo dated 30/08/24 of a Barn Owl. A report from the Wildlife and Countryside Link (WCL) coalition of 90 nature organisations has warned of a 'black hole' in evidence that the proposals to make developers pay a fee, rather than follow existing rules to protect wildlife, would work for many species. It puts a whole host of British species including hazel dormice, otters, barn owls, grey seals, Atlantic salmon, badgers, hedgehogs, rare fungi and plants, and even recently reintroduced beavers, potentially at risk, they argue. Issue date: Saturday October 18, 2025.-stock-foto
