Matsumoto says he plans to visit all 88 temples and has completed 12 so far. Pilgrims, known as “ohenro,” travel across the island of Shikoku, visiting 88 temples associated with the Buddhist monk Kukai, also known as Kobo Daishi. The pilgrimage route spans roughly 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) and can be completed on foot, by bicycle or by vehicle, passing through mountains, coastal areas and rural communities.-stock-foto
