A manual of operative surgery . bones. The metatarsal and tarsal branchesof that vessel are also divided. The twosaphenous veins come in this flap. At the anterior part of the inner seg-ment of the plantar flap the internal plantarartery is divided, and near the base of thesecond metatarsal bone the end of the external plantar. In theouter part of the flap are the digital branches of the latter vessel. Comment.—The value of this operation is open to seriousquestion, and in many points it does not compare favourablywith Symes amputation. It is not adapted for cases of bonedisease as a rule. It ends medially by uniting with the medial dorsal digital vein of the great toe to form the great saphenous vein, and laterally by joining the lateral dorsal digital vein of the little toe to form the small saphenous vein. The dorsal venous arch receives the dorsal metatarsal veins; interdigital efferents from the plantar trans- verse arch; and numerous tributaries from the dorsum of the foot, which anasto- mose freely toget-stock-foto
