Recessed-Leg Rectangular Stool, 17th century, 19 7/8 x 19 1/8 x 15 1/4 in. (50.48 x 48.58 x 38.74 cm), Huang-hua-li hardwood, China, 17th century, Sturdily constructed and versatile, recessed-leg stools with splayed legs are one of the basic categories of Ming period seating furniture. Although pictorial sources show that stools were the most frequently used seats, especially for women, they have not survived in great numbers. Within the hierarchy of seating furniture, stools occupied a relatively low position and social status was reflected in who used the tall armchairs versus those who sat-stock-foto

Stool, 17th century, 20 3/8 x 22 13/16 x 18 1/2 in. (51.75 x 57.94 x 46.99 cm), Huang huali hardwood, China, 17th century, This richly carved waisted stool, because of its relatively elaborate detailing, would have been reserved for a person of high social standing. The legs, for instance, are carved with a continuous corner bead terminating in a stylized leaf motif in each of the feet. There is an elegant lip carved with a motif on two sides of each leg just below the humpback stretchers. A raised ruyi head lappet design is also carved into the shoulder of each leg and the waist itself is set-stock-foto

Bench, 18th century, 14 3/4 x 13 7/16 x 38 3/16 in. (37.47 x 34.13 x 97 cm), Red bean wood, plant fibers, China, 18th century, This elegantly proportioned, well-crafted bench, while small, could still probably accommodate two sitters at the same time. It is fashioned in the standard corner-leg or 'waisted' style with legs terminating in horse hoof feet. The frame is constructed of red bean wood, a rare, extremely dense and heavy material that provides exceptional strength. Stools, like Chinese furniture in general, had their own hierarchy based on height, shape, material, and decoration.-stock-foto
