William Whewell FRS FGS (1794-1866) was an English polymath who was a leading figure in 19th century science. He was a scientist, mathematician, philosopher, theologian, Anglican priest, poet, and a historian of science. He contributed numerous scientific terms to the English language, including the term scientist, along with physicist, ion, cathode, catastrophism, and uniformitarianism, among others. Whewell was also known for his opposition to evolution and his view that observable evidence of design in nature pointed to a divine intelligent Creator.-stock-foto
