A photograph of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in orbit above the Earth, backdropped by the turquoise waters and islands of the Caribbean Sea, including Cuba and the Bahamas. Captured during the STS-31 mission in April, the image shows the observatory shortly after its deployment from the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle Discovery. Launched as a joint project between NASA and the European Space Agency, the telescope was designed to provide a clear view of the universe from above the Earth's atmosphere. 1990.-stock-foto

A photograph from NASA depicting United States astronaut Bruce McCandless II (1937–2017) during the STS-41-B mission as he performed the first untethered extravehicular activity in history. Utilising the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), a nitrogen-propelled, hand-controlled backpack, McCandless achieved complete independence from the Space Shuttle Challenger, allowing for unprecedented mobility in the vacuum of space while orbiting above the Earth. This mission demonstrated the technical viability of the MMU for satellite retrieval and orbital repair operations. 1984.-stock-foto

A photograph depicting the spiral galaxy Messier 81 (M81), also known as Bode's Galaxy, located in the constellation of Ursa Major. Situated approximately 12 million light-years from Earth, the galaxy is shown here in a NASA image highlighting its bright central nucleus and expansive spiral arms. These arms contain significant star-forming regions, visible as bright knots of light within the blue-tinted structure. Messier 81 was first discovered by the German astronomer Johann Elert Bode in 1774 and is a prominent member of the M81 Group of galaxies. c.1995.-stock-foto

A halftone illustration of Bedford and Cavour from H.G. Wells' science fiction novel, 'The First Men in the Moon'. The scene depicts the characters having arrived on the Moon, where Bedford discovers that the Moon's gravity is weaker than that of the Earth, requiring him to move less violently. The novel explores humanity's first journey to the lunar surface and an encounter with an alien civilisation known as Selenites, addressing themes of discovery and the scientific challenges of space travel.
