LORENZO DI ALESSANDRO DA SANSEVERINO (documented 1468-1503 in Sanseverino Marche) Piet? c. 1491 Tempera on wood, 62 x 158 cm Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence Lorenzo di Alessandro da Sanseverino, a painter from the cirle of Girolamo da Camerino, is certainly one of the leading exponents of the art of the Marches, a region whose art we are familiar with in a rather summary way and whose artists have lacked adequate critical appraisal. This Piet? is a lucid work, but one in which the tension characterizing much of Lorenzo's art is barely able to emerge, frozen as it is by an excessive, rather-stock-foto

LORENZETTI, Pietro (b. ca. 1280, Siena, d. 1348, Siena) Madonna Enthroned with Angels 1340 Tempera on wood, 145 x 122 cm Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence This altarpiece was painted for the church of San Francesco in Pistoia, where remained until 1799, to be transferred in the Uffizi Gallery. Among the latest work of Pietro Lorenzetti, the picture shows the tender motif of the silent colloquy that binds Mother and Child, which is characteristic of the style of other contemporary masters, as Giotto or the sculptor Giovanni Pisano. The predella paintings, described by Vasari, are lost. The pai-stock-foto

LONGHI, Pietro (b. 1702, Venezia, d. 1783, Venezia) The Confession 1750s Oil on canvas, 61 x 50 cm Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence After devoting his efforts to historical painting, from the 1730s he concentrated on portraying the society of his day with a subtle vein of irony. --- Keywords: -------------- Author: LONGHI, Pietro Title: The Confession Time-line: 1701-1750 School: Italian Form: painting Type: genre-stock-foto

LORENZO DI CREDI (b. ca. 1459, Firenze, d. 1537, Firenze) Venus 1493-94 Oil on canvas, 151 x 69 cm Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence This canvas was found by chance at the Medici villa of Cafaggiolo in 1869. It would seem to be an unfinished work. A close examination of the painting reveals the transparency of the figure's extremely thin skin, almost as if there had been only a first, provisional application of the paint. The fair-haired, muscular young woman is called Venus because of her clear affinity with classical prototype of the "Venere Pudica". --- Keywords: -------------- Autho-stock-foto

LORENZO DI CREDI (b. ca. 1459, Firenze, d. 1537, Firenze) Portrait of Perugino c. 1504 Oil on wood, 51 x 37 cm Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence This splendid portrait - at the Uffizi since 1704 - has been much discussed, as the painter and the figure have been mysterious for a long time: it once was thought to be Martin Luther painted by Holbein, then Andrea del Verrocchio by Lorenzo di Credi, or again a portrait of unknown man. Lastly, the identification of the man has been possible by comparison with the Pietro Perugino's self-portrait painted in the Collegio del Cambio at Perugia; and the-stock-foto

LORENZO DI CREDI (b. ca. 1459, Firenze, d. 1537, Firenze) Adoration of the Shepherds c. 1510 Oil on wood, 224 x 196 cm Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence The painting shows meticulous draftsmanship and technical perfection, but is totally devoid of any dramatic force, the artist having eclectically assimilated influences from other artists - Perugino, Verrocchio and even Leonardo himself. The inspiration from the Adoration of Hugo van der Goes is also evident. The absence of any emotional involvement may be due to the fact that at the end of his life Lorenzo di Credi was a disciple of Savonaro-stock-foto

LORENZETTI, Pietro (b. ca. 1280, Siena, d. 1348, Siena) Beata Umilta Transport Bricks to the Monastery c. 1341 Oil on wood, 45 x 32 cm Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence The panel is part of a dismembered polyptych representing scenes of the life of Beata Umilta. The altarpiece was in the Convent of the Donne di Faenza in Florence. It was signed and dated, however, the repainted date has been variously read as 1316 and 1341. The latter interpretation is accepted since the calmness of the narration points towards the later activity of the master. --- Keywords: -------------- Author: LOREN-stock-foto

LORENZETTI, Ambrogio (b. ca. 1290, Siena, d. 1348, Siena) Scenes of the Life of St Nicholas c. 1332 Tempera on wood Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence In the bottom scene of the second panel depicting stories of St Nicholas, he is elected his city's bishop. --- Keywords: -------------- Author: LORENZETTI, Ambrogio Title: Scenes of the Life of St Nicholas Time-line: 1301-1350 School: Italian Form: painting Type: religious-stock-foto

LONGHI, Alessandro (b. 1733, Venezia, d. 1813, Venezia) Portrait of a Lady c. 1770 Oil on canvas, 100 x 80 cm Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence Originally following in the footsteps of his father, Alessandro Longhi found his own direction as a specialist portrait-painter, although his style is always lighter and less acutely and intellectually penetrating than that of Pietro. In this painting of the Uffizi, the face, with its surface smile, without secret thoughts, impenetrable as the white mask attached to the black three-cornered hat, is engulfed by the stunning dress, with its lace frills a-stock-foto

LEONARDO da Vinci (b. 1452, Vinci, d. 1519, Cloux, near Amboise) The Baptism of Christ (detail) 1472-75 Oil on wood Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence When Leonardo worked under Verrocchio he participated in many works including Verrocchio's The Baptism of Christ. The gentle modelling of the left angel's head and the fact that the paint at this point contains oil supports the general attribution of this section to Leonardo. The painting was probably produced for the church of San Salvi in Florence and was mentioned as early as 1510 by Albertini, who stated that Leonardo painted the angel's head-stock-foto

LARGILLI?RE, Nicolas de (b. 1656, Paris, d. 1746, Paris) Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Rousseau 1710 Oil on canvas, 90 x 73 cm Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence Jean-Baptiste Rousseau (1671-1741) was a French dramatist and poet who enjoyed great popularity in the witty and decadent Parisian society of his day.
