An engraving depicting Holbein's Gate in Whitehall, London, which was built during the reign of Henry VIII (1491–1547) of the Tudor Dynasty (1485–1603). Serving as a ceremonial entrance to the Palace of Whitehall, the gate featured distinctive chequered flint and stone masonry along with terracotta roundels of Roman emperors by Giovanni da Maiano. Despite its name, there is little evidence that the artist Hans Holbein designed it, though he likely lived nearby. This illustration was published in Vetusta Monumenta by the Society of Antiquaries of London. c.1880.-stock-foto
