Authority of Law Statue at the Supreme Court in Washington DC | WASHINGTON — The marble statue "The Authority of Law" by sculptor James Earle Fraser flanks the west steps of the United States Supreme Court Building on Capitol Hill, Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026. The seated male figure holds a tablet inscribed "LEX," Latin for law, backed by a sheathed sword symbolizing enforcement. Fraser completed the roughly 10-foot statue in 1935, and it was installed that November, a month after the Court moved into the building. It rests on a marble cheek block weighing about 45 tons. A woodcut depicting a schoolmaster disciplining a student with a birch rod. Featured in Les petites Heures à l'usage de Chartres (The Little Hours for the Use of Chartres), the scene illustrates a common form of educational discipline practiced throughout Europe and Britain during the 16th century. The illustration represents the month of February, denoted by the zodiac sign of Pisces at the top, and references the Latin maxim 'Initium Sapientiae' to suggest that discipline is the beginning of wisdom. 1526.-stock-foto

A colour-printed wood engraving by Thomas Heath Robinson titled "The Countess Appears on the Battlements" depicting Agnes Randolph, Countess of Dunbar, known as Black Agnes, defending Dunbar Castle against English forces during the Second War of Scottish Independence. During the five-month siege in 1338, the Countess (c.1312–1369) successfully held the fortress against William Montagu, 1st Earl of Salisbury, famously mocking the besiegers by ordering her maids to wipe the dust from the battlements after each English bombardment. c.1910.-stock-foto

An illuminated manuscript titled "Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry" (The Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry) depicting the month of April commissioned by Jean, Duke of Berry (1340–1416). Created by the Limbourg brothers during the Valois dynasty (1328–1589), the miniature portrays a courtly betrothal scene in a spring meadow, with the Duke wearing a long blue robe seeded with gold fleurs-de-lis alongside noble ladies and attendants. The background features the Château de Dourdan and a pond where boatmen are netting fish, bordered by pollarded trees and a walled garden, while the upper-stock-foto

A hand-finished lithograph depicting Russian forces abandoning the southern part of Sevastopol (Sebastopol) for the northern forts during the Crimean War. Following the fall of the Malakoff redoubt on 8 September 1855, the Russian garrison conducted a strategic retreat across a pontoon bridge spanning the harbour, having scuttled the remnants of the Black Sea Fleet and ignited the city's magazines to prevent capture. The scene illustrates the mass movement of troops across the water as fires consume the fortifications under a darkening sky, marking the conclusion of the eleven-month siege. c.1-stock-foto

A wood engraving by Charles Ricketts depicting Agnes Randolph, Countess of Dunbar and March (c.1312–1369), famously known as "Black Agnes", leading the defence of Dunbar Castle against English forces. During the Second War of Scottish Independence in 1338, while her husband was absent, Agnes successfully resisted a five-month siege commanded by William Montagu, 1st Earl of Salisbury. She gained renown for her mockery of the English, reportedly directing her maids to clean the battlements with handkerchiefs after each bombardment to demonstrate the futility of the enemy's efforts. A painting titled "General Gordon's Last Stand" depicting Major-General Charles George Gordon (1833–1885), known as Chinese Gordon, at the Governor-General's Palace during the Siege of Khartoum. Gordon is shown standing with stoic composure at the top of a staircase, wearing a dark jacket and red fez, as Mahdist warriors in white jibbas with coloured patches ascend with spears and swords. The scene captures the fall of the city on 26 January 1885, following a ten-month siege by the forces of the Mahdi, Muhammad Ahmad. This idealised portrayal by George William Joy reflects the Victorian sentim-stock-foto

A cartoon titled 'In and Out' by Bernard Partridge (1861–1945) depicting an engineer returning to work after a seven-month strike and advising a Lancashire cotton spinner that industrial action will bring little benefit. The illustration comments on the significant labour disputes affecting British industry at the time, contrasting the conclusion of the North East coast engineering strike with the commencement of a lockout in the Lancashire cotton mills over proposed wage reductions. 1908.-stock-foto

An illuminated miniature from the 'Golf Book' by Simon Bening (c.1483–1561) depicting the month of August and the traditional labour of the grain harvest. The ornate golden border contains a bas-de-page scene illustrating the medieval game of cock-throwing, a typical secular activity included in such devotional manuscripts. This work represents the height of the Flemish school of illumination in Bruges during the sixteenth century. c.1540.-stock-foto

A woodcut titled "Boxing" from "An Almanac of Twelve Sports" by Sir William Nicholson (1872–1949) and Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936). Representing the month of November, the work exemplifies Nicholson’s innovative graphic style which combined the bold silhouettes of English chapbooks with the flat planes of Japanese woodblock prints. This collaborative project between the artist and the poet represented a significant shift in late nineteenth-century British book illustration towards a simplified, modern aesthetic and was published by William Heinemann in London, 1898.-stock-foto

A tinted lithograph of the damaged church at the back of the Redan, showing the aftermath of the Russian surrender on 11 September 1855. Following the eleven-month Siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War, the illustration captures the church's main dome pockmarked by shellfire and its spire partially ruined amidst debris and smoke. The fall of this vital Black Sea naval base significantly contributed to the defeat of the Russian Empire. Produced by William Simpson for 'Illustration of the War in the East', 1856.-stock-foto
