A woodcut of the ancient Greek astronomer and mathematician Aristarchus of Samos (c.310–c.230 BCE). Known for presenting the first known heliocentric model of the universe, Aristarchus proposed that the Sun remained unmoved at the centre while the Earth revolved around it. His revolutionary astronomical ideas were largely dismissed by his contemporaries in favour of geocentric models and were not fully vindicated until the Renaissance. This portrait is an illustration from Hartmann Schedel's 'Liber chronicarum mundi' (Nuremberg Chronicle), printed by Anton Koberger. 1493.-stock-foto

An illustration by Archibald Bertram Webb (1887–1944) depicting the Greek fabulist Aesop (c.620–564 BCE) holding his audience enthralled. According to the historian Herodotus, the legendary storyteller Aesop (Αἴσωπος, Aísōpos) lived during the 6th century BCE and was celebrated for moral tales that often featured anthropomorphised animals. This artistic reconstruction portrays the storyteller seated on a stone bench in a Mediterranean landscape, recounting his stories to a captivated group of listeners. Traditionally believed to have been a slave on the island of Samos, his life remains a mixt-stock-foto

A woodcut depicting Aesop (c.620–564 BCE), the legendary Greek fabulist and storyteller credited with a number of fables now collectively known as 'Aesop's Fables'. According to the historian Herodotus, Aesop was a slave who lived on the island of Samos during the 6th century BCE, although his historical existence remains a subject of scholarly debate. This characteristically stylised portrait was featured in Hartmann Schedel's 'Liber chronicarum mundi', an ambitious illustrated world history published in Nuremberg. 1493.-stock-foto

An engraving depicting the philosopher Pythagoras (c.560–c.480 BCE), an ancient Greek polymath and the founder of Pythagoreanism, known for his influential contributions to mathematics, music theory, and metaphysics. The Latin inscription below the image identifies him as Pythagoras of Samos and references his commitment to silence, questioning if the silent image is his true likeness. This portrait was included in André Thevet’s biographical work titled "Les Vrais Pourtraits et Vies des Hommes Illustres". 1584.-stock-foto
