The memorial, designed by architect John Russell Pope and dedicated in 1943, is a primary example of the Jeffersonian Neoclassical style. Its circular colonnade and shallow dome were inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, a form Thomas Jefferson himself admired and used in his design for the Rotunda at the University of Virginia.
