Tidal Basin Seawall Newly Completed Jefferson Memorial Background Washington DC USA // WASHINGTON, D.C. — The newly completed Phase 1 of the Tidal Basin Seawall Reconstruction Project is seen with the Jefferson Memorial in the background, Thursday, Dec. 18, 2025. The memorial, designed by architect John Russell Pope and dedicated in 1943, is a primary example of the Jeffersonian Neoclassical style. Its circular colonnade and shallow dome were inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, a form Thomas Jefferson himself admired and used in his design for the Rotunda at the University of Virginia.
